Blog Post for 03/16

One part in book 22 of The Iliad that really stuck with me was when Hektor was preparing to fight Achilleus. I enjoyed talking about this in class because I feel like we can all sort of relate to it. Despite the fact that Hektor knew Achilleus was most definitely going to beat him, so many things were crossing his mind as to how he could possible prevent this from happening. Yes, Hektor was prideful and thought it would be best to just kill Achilleus and get it over with, however he stopped to think to himself that maybe there were ways to reason with Achilleus. As was said in class, Hektor had some hope in reasoning with Achilleus and this is something most people do in certain situations. We tend to cling on to the hope thinking it could possibly make a different but in the end it usually doesn’t, especially in Hektors case. It may have been illogical for him to even think giving back Helen or treasures would stop Achilleus rage, but he had that initial reaction to the situation, as most of us have, as well.
